1 (Learning English outside the class room)

Reading a short story is one of the best choices to practice your English. Short stories provide ample opportunities to increase your knowledge about different cultures and different lifestyles. It can develop writing skills and increases the readers’ vocabulary. It is very useful to practice my reading skill. The short story what I have read is What a Lottery. This story is written by Colin Campbell. There are nine chapters in this story. The main characters are Rick Drummond, Mary, Barry Green and Sarah.
The first chapter is Buying a Lottery Ticket. Rick Drummond is going to buy a lottery ticket but he got the wrong shop. Then, He buys a lottery ticket from Mr. Khan and goes back to his house. Chapter two is She’s Leaving. She is mean Mary (Rick’s wife). Rick always plays the guitar and writes songs. Therefore, Mary leaves him alone. Chapter three is Winning the Lottery. Rick looks at the television. It’s the lottery. He has got those numbers. He gets eight million pounds. Then he thinks, I’m rich. I can buy anything. I can play my music and I can be famous. Moreover, He wants his to be with his wife. So, he decided to Glasgow to meet Mary. Chapter four is The Taxi. The other people in the story is Barry Green. He is running from the police. He steals the taxi and drives away from a petrol station. Chapter five is train to Glasgow. Rick wants to go to Glasgow by train but there is no train station there. Chapter six is Rick stop a taxi. It’s midnight. Rick want to go to Glasgow but he doesn’t know how to go there. He runs in front of the taxi and it stops. The driver is Barry Green who is running from the police. He looks very angry. However, Barry  haven’t got any money so, he says OK to Rick. Rick says I have got winning lottery ticket. I can pays for you no matter how much it is. Chapter seven is Goodbye, lottery ticket. Rick and Barry stop and go into the café. Barry goes to buy the drink. He puts the tea down fast on the table. The hot tea goes on the ticket. Barry shouts ‘Give me your half of the ticket. The ticket is no good now. Suddenly, Rick falls and his head hits the table. Chapter eight is Where am I? Who am I? Rick can’t remember his name. He can’t remember anything. He meets Sarah. Sarah is a singer. She is looking for a new guitar player. Rick plays guitar very well so he is a new guitar player for Sarah. The last chapter is It’s like winning the lottery. Sarah sing songs and Rick plays guitar. Everyone loves them.
Conclusion, Rick loves music and wants to be a rock star. But he has no money and his wife leaves him. Then he wins the lottery but it cannot use. Anywise, He can do the things he loves. From this story, I have learnt that “Do not allow what you cannot do, interfere with what you can do. You can reach your dreams faster Doing things you're good at.)
