Reflect: Teaching Speaking

Speaking is "the process of building and sharing meaning through the use of verbal and non-verbal symbols, in a variety of contexts" (Chaney, 1998, p. 13). Speaking is a crucial part of second language learning and teaching. Today's world requires that the goal of teaching speaking should improve students' communicative skills. From the presentation Teaching Speaking by my classmates group one, I learnt what is speaking, principle for teaching, speaking fluency and accuracy, provide opportunities for student, plan speaking tasks, design classroom activities, classroom techniques and tasks and the teacher’s roles in speaking activities. They were used power point to present all about the aforementioned topics.
The first point is the meaning of speaking. They presented that many people feel that speaking in a new language is harder than reading or writing. Speaking happens in real time and when you speak you cannot edit or revise what you wish to say. Second point was the principle for teaching speaking. They said that be aware of the difference between second language and foreign language learning contexts. A second language context is the language of communication in the society. The third point was give students practice with both fluency and accuracy. Accuracy is the text to which students’ speech matches what people actually say when they use the target language. The forth point was provide opportunities for students to talk by using group work or pair work and limiting teacher talk. The fifth point was plan speaking tasks that involve negotiation for meaning. Besides, design classroom activities that involve guidance and practice in both transitional and interactional speaking. More interestingly, they presented classroom techniques and tasks. Namely, information gap, jigsaw activities, the hot seat, Interview the picture, Turning on inner voice, Buzz groups, from sentence to discussion, prompt cards, reaching a consensus, pyramid discussion, telling stories, making oral presentation, simulation and role-plays. The last point was the teacher’s roles in speaking activities. What is more, teachers need to be a prompter pushing student forward, suggesting things they might say next and helping them out of difficulties. Teachers may also need to keep on encouraging them to speak in English rather than using their first language.
All in all, speaking is the delivery of language through the mouth. To speak, we create sounds using many parts of our body, including the lungs, vocal tract, vocal chords, tongue, teeth and lips. Speaking is probably the language skill that most language learners wish to perfect as soon as possible. It used to be the only language skill that was difficult to practice. More importantly, teaching speaking is very important for teachers to know deeply how to teach students effectively. As the teacher in the future, I will try my best to learn how to teach speaking effectively.

3 New Teaching Method Improve the Educational Process

Nowadays, “Chalk and Talk” is the old traditional method of teaching. This method is used in classrooms across the world. However, this formal and somewhat unimaginative teaching method has come under scrutiny, with many people suggesting that teachers should not rely solely on this technique if they want to engage and inspire their students. “chalk and talk” method fails to stimulate many students’ interests in learning.  Some students are not attentive in class and do not naturally have the motivation to learn. How to solve the problems? There are 3 New Teaching Method Improve the Educational Process; Spaced Learning, Flexible Friday and Engagement.
First, Spaced Learning is a learning method in which highly condensed learning content is repeated three times, with two 10-minute breaks during which distractor activities such as physical activities are performed by the students. This learning method involves encouraging students to  quickly switch through activities. It helps them to create the connection that they need actually remember the knowledge. The benefit is allowing people to relax. Second, Flexible Fridays is an in-depth session of a subject can be acquired by simply having a whole day of English language or other subject. Teacher try to help each student and learn what is the most difficult for him/her personally. The teacher can help students grasp difficult concepts. Third, Engagement is a new teaching method. Students are argued to engage with the real world analyses  everying  that happens in different life cycle.  The key is to get Students engaged and connect their learning to the real world.

To sum up, Teacher should teach in the new way or new method to enhance students to learn.  Most of Thai teacher use only Chalk and Talk in their classroom. So, 3 New Teaching Method Spaced Learning, Flexible Friday and Engagement are useful for teachers to teach their student.  As the teacher in the future we have to learn new teaching method all the time. We have to update our teaching style as much as we can.

WEEK 2 (Learning English inside the classroom)

Today, I have learnt a lot in the classroom.  Education system in Thailand “FOR A FAIR SELECTION EVERYBODY HAS TO TAKE THE SAME EXAM”.  Although it is fair, It absolutely Fail. The Thai Education System is One of the Worst in S.E. Asia and is Worsening Every Year said Cassandra James, a British-American teacher in Thailand. Anirut Chumsawat ’my English instructor said 2W3P( Warm up, Presentation, Practice, Production and Wrap up) is not effective to teach Thai students. Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) and Task Based Language Teaching (TBLT) are useful teaching approach for Thai Teachers to run classroom activities more effectively.
Let begin with the principles of Communicative Language Teaching. First, make real communication (4 skills) of language learning. Second, give opportunities for learners to experiment and try out what they know. Students should have will for communication. Third, be to learnt of learners’ errors. The learner is building up his or her communicative competences.   There are three level of learning (Surface Learning, Deep Learning and Achievement Learning).
Fourth, provide opportunities for learners to develop both accuracy and fluency. Fifth, link the different skills for instant listening with speaking. Sixth, inductive teaching (student induce grammar rule).
Task Based Language Teaching (TBLT) emphasizes the use of authentic language through meaningful tasks. Task is an activity carried out using language. There are three main points of TBL.1 Process (Pre, While, Post) 2. Communication and meaning (CLT) 3.Purposeful activities and tasks (Clear Objective). Moreover, the sequence of activity in TBLT are pre-task, the task cycle and the language focus. According to the sequence of activity, Pre-task is use to introduce topic and task. There steps of Task Cycle are as the following: Task (student do the task in pairs or small groups while teacher monitors). Planning (student prepare to report to the whole class / oral or written). Report (some group present their report to the class and compare result). Last, Two part of language focus that is analysis and practice.

Education in our country is very worst; consequently, as one of the Thai population I must study hard not only me but all of Thai students. Both students and teachers must know their roles.  Thailand is now facing a crisis in education. Meanwhile, education in countries such as Vietnam, Malaysia, Korea and China is improving in leaps and bounds. Thai teachers should create their lesson plan by using mainly Task Based Language Teaching approach.

1 (Learning English outside the class room)

Reading a short story is one of the best choices to practice your English. Short stories provide ample opportunities to increase your knowledge about different cultures and different lifestyles. It can develop writing skills and increases the readers’ vocabulary. It is very useful to practice my reading skill. The short story what I have read is What a Lottery. This story is written by Colin Campbell. There are nine chapters in this story. The main characters are Rick Drummond, Mary, Barry Green and Sarah.
The first chapter is Buying a Lottery Ticket. Rick Drummond is going to buy a lottery ticket but he got the wrong shop. Then, He buys a lottery ticket from Mr. Khan and goes back to his house. Chapter two is She’s Leaving. She is mean Mary (Rick’s wife). Rick always plays the guitar and writes songs. Therefore, Mary leaves him alone. Chapter three is Winning the Lottery. Rick looks at the television. It’s the lottery. He has got those numbers. He gets eight million pounds. Then he thinks, I’m rich. I can buy anything. I can play my music and I can be famous. Moreover, He wants his to be with his wife. So, he decided to Glasgow to meet Mary. Chapter four is The Taxi. The other people in the story is Barry Green. He is running from the police. He steals the taxi and drives away from a petrol station. Chapter five is train to Glasgow. Rick wants to go to Glasgow by train but there is no train station there. Chapter six is Rick stop a taxi. It’s midnight. Rick want to go to Glasgow but he doesn’t know how to go there. He runs in front of the taxi and it stops. The driver is Barry Green who is running from the police. He looks very angry. However, Barry  haven’t got any money so, he says OK to Rick. Rick says I have got winning lottery ticket. I can pays for you no matter how much it is. Chapter seven is Goodbye, lottery ticket. Rick and Barry stop and go into the café. Barry goes to buy the drink. He puts the tea down fast on the table. The hot tea goes on the ticket. Barry shouts ‘Give me your half of the ticket. The ticket is no good now. Suddenly, Rick falls and his head hits the table. Chapter eight is Where am I? Who am I? Rick can’t remember his name. He can’t remember anything. He meets Sarah. Sarah is a singer. She is looking for a new guitar player. Rick plays guitar very well so he is a new guitar player for Sarah. The last chapter is It’s like winning the lottery. Sarah sing songs and Rick plays guitar. Everyone loves them.
Conclusion, Rick loves music and wants to be a rock star. But he has no money and his wife leaves him. Then he wins the lottery but it cannot use. Anywise, He can do the things he loves. From this story, I have learnt that “Do not allow what you cannot do, interfere with what you can do. You can reach your dreams faster Doing things you're good at.)
